We flicked the switch and launched (well in Closed Beta mode). You’ll find virtual burgers everywhere thanks to a Carl’s Jr/Hardee’s promotion. Once you’ve had your fill of the virtual charbroiled goodies, you’re a click away from a universe of 3D worlds and you can even make one yourself.
Here’s the lowdown:
Sign up at http://www.exitreality.com/ and download ExitReality.
During the Closed Beta, you’ll find yourself in the Carl’s Jr. burger restaurant. Try riding the mechanical bull, clicking on the napkin holders and straw holders and playing the games on the arcade machines. Click on the ‘Take Away’ meal and you’ll head straight to the Carl’s Jr. apartment.
This is an apartment that has been decorated.
Every web page on the Internet has an instant 3D space that can be decorated.

Every MySpace.com profile has an apartment, for example.

Just click on the ExitReality logo in the top toolbar and type in your MySpace profile URL, or go to your profile and use the ‘visit in 3D’ button in your Internet Explorer or Firefox toolbar (which will be visible within your toolbar only once you have downloaded and installed the ExitReality plug-in.)
Search for decorations in the ‘Things’ search on the right-hand side and just drag and drop into your place. You can even change the theme entirely – make it a dojo or red moon for example.
Move and edit your decorations by using the toolbar on the left.
Click the save button, follow the instructions and you’re done!
Once you’ve decorated your own place try visiting the thousands of custom-built 3D places. Search for Chateau in the ‘Places’ search on the right-hand side and click ‘go to world’ to get there.
Now every time you see a ‘launch in 3D’ button on someone’s page or Website, you’ll be able to see what they’ve done with the place.
And there’s more to come. When we launch in Public Beta shortly, there will be even more to discover.

I am interested in learning more about how to design pages to work with this in an educational environment. I did not sign up for the partnership but it appears that this is the only way to access documentation? I’d love to learn more.

I am on board for the Mac beta test whenever you are.
Until then I will just sit here and drool over the possibilities.
P.S. I am also interested in the educational implications.

I’m interested in this product and I do have Parallels installed on my MacBook Pro so I can run Windows in a pinch. But this is a no go for me until you have a Mac version. I only run Microsoft stuff when it is absolutely necessary and that would not include this case.
Don’t forget that Mark Pesce ventured the opinion that VRML never got sufficient traction because it lacked enough Mac native tools. Try not to repeat that unfortunate experience.
